OF DIVORCE AND SHARING PROPERTY

Posted by yeswedid on September 30, 2009

I will never know why two people who loved each other, decided to get married, raise a family together, get to a point where they can’t stand each other. You marry someone, share a life and after 20 years they say they want a divorce because you are incompatible! Great! After 20 years? It took you that long to realize it? I don’t know what is worse anyway; having a divorce after one year or as many as over 20 years?

Take for example this couple that is in one of the television soaps that I watch. They were such a good couple that I admired and so in love. She got a job overseas and he couldn’t keep his pants on! He cheated! Naturally, this caused a lot of  strain on their relationship. Long story short, he asked her for a divorce because he loves and wants to be with the other woman {the one he cheated on her with}.

As the law requires {this law has recently been enacted here in Uganda as well}, they each have to fully declare their assets, and each takes half of what the other has. This is not a bad thing only in this case, the man has less than the woman. See, she made more money {she is a model} in the period she was overseas. Her argument is that she can’t stand that bitch {forgive my language but that’s what she calls the woman her husband is leaving her for}, to have it both ways; take her man and enjoy her money as well! So she decided not t declare all the money, unfortunately, the lawyers found this out.

More importantly, she made this money while he was already cheating on him. In reality, this man who is divorcing her should not have right to that money, because while she was working her finger to the bone, he was sleeping around! I don’t know how it will play out but for now, she is determined not to lose a man {“to that bitch”} and her hard-earned money in the process {go girl}! Poor thing, she still loves the man.

This is where the law fails me. In fact, in some aspects the law is very unfair {according to me}. Take the above case as an example. According to the law, it doesn’t matter whether he cheated while they were still married, she has to declare all her money and assets, and he has to take half of it! As a young girl, I wanted to be a lawyer but it got me angry and confused when lawyers would stand up confidently in courts of law,  to defend  murderers. I realized that my conscious would stand in the way of things. So I chose a profession without twists- journalism {at least not the lawyer-twists}. Well, this is where we are- in this world, where we love so hard like we’ve never lost {in love},give our all, do our best….but still get our fingers {read hearts} burnt- literally, in the process. What’s your take on this? What’s your experience? Please share with me.
